JIJ’s legal team built one of the most extensive factual records to date on the hostages taken on October 7 and the abuse they endured.

Our lawyers spent 873 days compiling 6,971 data points across 251 hostage profiles. We conducted 23 confidential interviews with survivors and first responders and visited attack sites and bomb shelters to document the evidence firsthand.

Among the hostages were 23 children ages 12 and under, including a 9-month-old baby. 34 were over 60. They came from at least 24 countries and from Jewish, Christian, Buddhist, Hindu, Muslim, and Druze backgrounds.

At least 78 released hostages showed signs of starvation. 61% of those held over 200 days were denied medical care. 12 hostages have publicly described sexual assault in captivity. 68% were forced into propaganda videos. 33 were executed.

These are not isolated abuses. They are evidence of systematic torture and dehumanization.

We do more than document.

JIJ brought this evidence directly to the UN Human Rights Bodies in New York and Geneva, calling for hostage-taking to be formally recognized as torture and for the perpetrators to be held accountable.
